A fair effort from a new writer. First, I'll tell you what I didn't enjoy - a plot/world that wasn't all that fresh and an ending that spiraled out of control. I thought the world and plot were stock fantasy and not all that original. The ending became suddenly metaphysical when most of the book stayed firmly in the realm of reality.
I enjoyed the equality of men and women portrayed in this book, as well as the 'can-do' attitude exhibited by the heroine. The book is also a safe read for pre-teens with no inappropriate sexual asides.
I also appreciated that the book began and ended within a single volume. Most fantasy writers would try to stretch this epic across a number of books.

It was a decent read, but I'm guessing it was a first book. Everything was telegraphed, so you pretty much knew what was going to happen long before it actually did. I liked the general concept and the characters were engaging.
It is worth reading to get to the next few books in the series. She really matures as a writer and I found her subsequent books much more enjoyable.
This is a great story. I really had not expected it, because I got it on a one day sale, and my experience with those is that it's meant to move the more mediocre books. So to find something that is truly good is a really pleasant surprise. I could not put this book down, and stayed up late for several nights to get through it. I even contemplated taking a day off of work to keep reading!

Karigan is a girl from a newly wealthy family, studying at a boarding school and having...let's call it "social difficulties". She decides to run away, and upon leaving the town, comes across a dying messenger of the King, one of the fabled Green Riders. She promises to deliver his message, and he dies in her arms. Spurred on by the urgency of his dying wish (and the two black arrows in his back) she takes his horse, sword, and brooch (which will identify her as a messenger), and begins to ride toward the capitol. At first she tries to take the most direct route, but the horse keeps fighting her. Being a reasonably good rider, she decides that there's a reason for the horses hesitation, and takes the long way around. Once on the road, several forces try to stop her from delivering her message, but Karigan soon makes as many allies as enemies, and learns to weild the Green Rider magic.

Although a lot of the adventures that ensue are caused by magic, or users of magic, there is still a logic to it. The author treats magic as a natural force with a natural order, so the story flows well. The characters are well developed, and the story is paced well. If I had to compare Kristen Britain to another author, I'd say her style is reminiscent of Terry Goodkind. Overall, this story is a terrific escape.
I love this book to pieces! My copy is almost falling apart I have read it so many times. Everyone needs to read this book. That is how much I love it.

I first read this book in seventh or eighth grade and fell in love with it. At that time, only Green Rider and the sequel First Rider’s Call were out. In high school I convinced my friend to read them and we totally fangirled together. My friend designed Green Rider broaches in art class and we both read the third book, The High King’s Tomb, as soon as it was released. Then Blackveil was released when I was in college and Mirror Sight just came out a year ago. Yeah, I am kind of addicted to this series and not at all ashamed of it.

Green Rider begins with Karigan G’ladheon waking on the road after running away from her school, Selium. She ran away because of an unfair suspension which was the result of a fight with an aristocrat. Her plans are just to get home and talk to her father since she believes he can make anything better.

Then a charging horse and rider are upon Karigan. The rider is dying, impaled with two black arrows in his back. He, F’ryan Cobblebay, asks Karigan if she will take a message to King Zachary in Sacor City for love of her country, a message that could mean life or death. Karigan agrees. The messenger has Karigan take his broach and tells her to “beware the shadow man.”

Now Karigan is on an extremely dangerous mission that she is not really prepared for. She is riding across the country with an important message that some want never to be delivered. One messenger is already dead and now they are after Karigan and The Horse.

Along the way to Sacor City, Karigan encounters strange things, things of legend monsters from Kanmorhan Vane and the Shadow Man for starters. She is chased by more than just Mirwellian soldiers. Karigan needs to rely on every instinct she has for survival if she wants to make it to the king in time.

Karigan is such a strong character. She is a young woman who runs away from school, not exactly someone trained for anything she will encounter. Yet Karigan is stubborn and willing to do anything to keep her promise to F’ryan Cobblebay. She will reach Sacor City no matter what. If there is a way, Karigan will find it.

I love this book to no end. Everyone should read it because there is something for everyone in it. There are horses and monsters. There is magic and sword fighting. There are kind old ladies and those stirring up trouble. There is a spunky girl and a power-hungry man. Really, I think everyone could find something to love in this novel.

For those who like adventure and strong female characters, this book has everything you need. It's a young adult read, I remember reading it in high school at the recommendation of our librarian following my finishing of the Wild Magic series by Tamara Pierce. I have started reading it again, since I recently discovered that there have been two more books added to the series (totaling 4) since I read them many years ago. So far, they still hold up. Adventure, personal growth, and no pesky love triangles. Karigan is brave and determined, and yes, she is a teenager and has teenage hormones, but she doesn't let a love story get in the way of the book narrative. There is potential for a future relationship, the book deals more with her determination to get her job done so she can return to the life she ran away from in the beginning.

If you like Eragon, Golden Compass, and Wild Magic, you should give these a read.
