Hardship Theirs Not to Reason Why Book 4 eBook Jean Johnson
What I would have liked to know before I bought this book. (no spoilers)1. What type of book is it: action, drama, etc? This is initially an action driven military sci-fi drama story with no romance and with a lot of combat conflict. The combat action tappers off. The book becomes a duller political and Time-divergent metaphysical story.
2. What is the story about, in general? The story continues Ia's efforts to save the galaxy through her many psychic abilities by saving a particular critical world. To save this world, Ia will have to overcome alien wildlife, stubborn red-tape, frogtopi soldiers, meddling ... Meddlers and her own insecurities. Do not expect space combat, this is a `ground pounder' book.
3. What/Who is the target audience? Those in the military service might find this story agreeable, regardless of gender. Teenagers, young adults and adult males will probably also enjoy this read.
4. Is there character development? In my opinion, Ia has character evolution, but most of the secondary characters don't. The story is about Ia, so this lack of evolution doesn't excessively hurt the story, but it is noticeable. The only person I felt significant empathy with was Ia. I felt very vague empathy for any of the other characters. They simply didn't cohesively integrate into my awareness beyond acquaintances.
Ia's development has reached a rather satisfying point, and even with her Feyori changes, there is little about her mentality that needs changing. Having said that, the Ia character has not abandoned morality. She still suffers the burdens of her actions, in compelling human empathy. On top of that, she has to juggle with Meddler urges.
5. Are the characters likable? Ia is likable, the rest didn't impact my perception that much. They are necessary, sure, but they felt a little generic, even forgettable. Considering the great synergy these characters enjoyed in previous volumes, I find this somewhat unsatisfactory. One mayor secondary character is a one dimensional scene prop, but WITHIN the plot evolution. That is to say, the character isn't one dimensional because of author indifference but because said one dimensional aspect is induced by the plot itself. It is the first time I've seen this so well conducted in any book. It's a very neat solution and has my admiration.
6. Does the story keep its pacing? Yes and no. Early on, Ia faces a well thought out and difficult hurdle that added a large degree of spice to the volume. The story has nice tension without fully grasping the thrilling fast pace of the well written combat missions that we saw in the previous installments. This book is more about intrigue, more about the `chessboard' contention than the armed contention. Initially it doesn't forgo tactical combat action, even gives it a solid percentage. Then, it tapers off to strategic combat action, and the reader, along with Ia sits `behind the lines'.
In addition, the story becomes somewhat political and metaphysical, with some amount of Time-Stream related conversation and details that might be confusing for some and not interesting for others.
7. Do you have to suspend disbelief? Hmm. Very little. The ceiling for disbelief is set pretty high on this universe. The Feyori powers and nature alone are pretty wild. Yet, the book is written in a very methodical and thoughtful manner that provides `down to earth' context for most scenes.
Some character conversations felt a little strained as their interactions lacked synergy.
8. Is the book worth the asking price? I am satisfied with what I paid for this ebook installment. You'll have to make your own decision on that.
In conclusion: This is a military drama sci-fi book that loses a fair bit of its pacing short of the end. Instead of revving up, the reader has to wind down. The story sacrifices all tactical combat scenes as it nears the end, but manages to successfully keep most of the story focus. Some scenes get a little too wordy, but not uninterestingly so. A few, very few, character conversations felt strained. The story focuses on Ia and she is a very compelling character throughout. Unfortunately many secondary characters leave much to be desired in both evolution and page time. The price of the ebook is quite fair for what I experienced. I don't believe I've wasted my money. I wasn't tripped by any spelling errors. There might be some, but they didn't register at all. The story is solid, though not as exciting as the previous series volume. The ending felt anticlimactic in context to how exciting the story was within the first half to mid point of this book installment. I still find the writing style enjoyable and the story well worth the effort. This is a good book.

Hardship Theirs Not to Reason Why Book 4 eBook Jean Johnson Reviews
I loved this book! To fully appreciate Hardship, read the others in the series first. . . Then this one. You need the background on the characters, the world building, the timeline, and various races. Not only that but understand the way the military is run and Ia's role as she advances from basic up the ranks.
I had to smile as I started to read. It's almost like Jean Johnson answered my questions from my last review (Hellfire). I asked about why the ship was destroyed, why that planet to evacuate her crew to, and what about the military coming down on Ia for destroying her ship? Yup, in the first chapter all my questions were answered. I felt like ok, now I'm on the same page and here we go.
Hardship spans two months of Ia's life. It's a more indepth look at the day to day grind in protecting the universe, as only she can do. She has gained allies and wears 'different hats' as her rank increases yet to other's she's 'just' The Prophet of 1,000 Years. She leads with a strong voice and gets results. Even 8 years into her career she still has problems to overcome. She's still growing as a person yet is still basing her decisions on her upbringing.
The war hasn't been easy and yes there are loses. The sneak peek into meeting an old basic training mate -- A reassessment of where she's been and how far she's come. It's amazing taking this journey with her. (And yes I want to grab the first book and reread just who was mentioned from those early days).
No, This book is not a romance. Yes, it is science fiction with emphasis on military action. It does have strong moral goals and the need to protect and save her galaxy as Ia knows it. The focus is on Ia who is a strong leader, strong in her paranormal abilities, her achievements are renoun, and still she comes back from each encounter a stronger person and willing to stay strong to do more. She even gives her personal code in this story to her peers, which includes performing to the best of her ability. And for those that have read this series, we all know just how awesome her abilities are. For those she works with she has gained their trust yet in this story she learns she can fail. She can't bask in knowing everything. Failure means discipline and she does learn from even this experience. Amazing writing and wonderful to read. Jean Johnson, thank you and look forward to your next story in this universe. I hope it continues long after the next book - Even a side story. -- Dan's Wife
